Welcome to the Fourth Mediccom Event, where we will be going back to PBL presentations. We picked Mental Health as we believe that in order to provide effective holistic care to a patient, a doctor must be able to understand different conditions and when they arise.
As Mental Health has a unique subject matter compared to our other topics, we have revised our criteria for our PBL Presentations:
1. Signs and symptoms
2. Etiological factors
2. Diagnostic criteria under various diagnostic manuals like ICD and DSM
3. Differential diagnosis
4. Treatment options
5. Prognosis and risks
6. Social/ legal/ethical issues
7. Research developments /evidence base
Make sure to reference each article used (Put your bibliography on the last slide). We hope you have fun researching!

Dementia is not a single disease; it’s an overall term — like heart disease — that covers a wide range of specific medical conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease. Disorders grouped under the general term “dementia” are caused by abnormal brain changes. These changes trigger a decline in thinking skills, also known as cognitive abilities, severe enough to impair daily life and independent function. They also affect behaviour, feelings and relationships. Alz.org

Anorexia is an eating disorder and serious mental health condition. People who have anorexia try to keep their weight as low as possible by not eating enough food or exercising too much, or both. This can make them very ill because they start to starve. People who have bulimia go through periods where they eat a lot of food in a very short amount of time (binge eating) and then make themselves sick, use laxatives or do excessive exercise, or a combination of these, to try to stop themselves gaining weight.
